The
mask carver is called the 'undagi tapel' and those who make the mask
posses an extremely high level of skill. Masks of the Barong and Rangda
are opulently painted and assembled with real hair, enormous teeth, and
bulging eyes. The wood used ranges from mahogany, suar, crocodile and
sono wood and they can use over 30 different tools to carve certain
pieces of wood.
There are four types of Bali masks which can be found, human masks,
animal masks, god masks and demon masks and depending on what dance it
is for, they could be whole masks or half masks.
Bali is rich in tradition, culture, beauty and talent and if you
come through, pop into our gallery and shop and we would be be happy to
explain all the different traditional and modern masks we have.
